![]() If it sounds like a lot to you, well, you probably haven't watched The Expanse's first three seasons. Oh, and there are protomolecule structures-seemingly ancient ruins that occasionally come to life by spewing swarms of tiny, flying robots-on that new planet. Meanwhile, on Mars, the now-disgraced Bobbie contends with civilian life in a dead-end job that eventually leads her down a dark path. The planet-called Ilus or New Terra, depending who you ask-was settled first by Belter refugees, but a team of researchers from an Earth-based corporation, led by security chief Adolphus Murtry (Burn Gorman), also assert a claim. Holden (Steven Strait), Naomi (Dominique Tipper), Amos (Wes Chatham), and Alex (Cas Anvar) are taking commands from UN Secretary-General Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), who sends them into the thorny situation developing on one of the unknown planets accessible through the "ring gates" that opened at the end of Season 3. Season 4 sees the Rocinante's crew on a mission to a new world. Luckily, The Expanse Season 4 continues the series' upward trajectory toward the highest orbit of sci-fi television. With the greater visibility that being on Amazon brings, this show might live or die based on its upcoming fourth season, the first to debut on its new home. The Expanse is one of those shows, and now that it's streaming on Amazon, it seems poised to gain the recognition it deserves. It stood out among the shows on Syfy, of which there are many, but only a handful throughout history that have really deserved to break through to the collective pop culture consciousness (shows like Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, and Channel Zero). To those who have enjoyed its first three seasons, The Expanse has always felt like something special. It’s going to be an interesting time for TV, although I worry that they’re after a hit show first and a good show second. To that end, in addition to picking up The Expanse, Amazon is also making series based on The Lord of the Ringsand The Wheel of Time. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos pretty much demanded that his company produce the heir to the throne. Lots of networks are currently trying to make “the next Game of Thrones,” but Amazon has been more blatant than most. They want this to be like their Game of Thrones.” ![]() “They want this show to go to tens of missions of people. And if they can have a bit more sex and violence…well, I’m sure they’ll be responsible about it. “They want this show to be a great show,” Anvar said of Amazon. Well, I’d never want to stand in the way of things becoming darker and sexier.īut seriously, Anvar has a point that fewer restrictions when it comes to episode length and commercial breaks could make for better, more responsive storytelling. We don’t have the restrictions in terms of content: it’s darker, it’s sexier, it’s a little more gritty, it’s a little more real. But we weren’t reaching the audiences that we could reach and it was being done in a format that didn’t serve the kind of show we were: with commercial breaks and the four acts and all that stuff… e’re not restricted by time, we don’t have to bang on 47 minutes every episode, we don’t have to worry about commercial breaks. ![]() It looked good, it really did serve the books, it honored the story and everything, it was a beautiful, high quality show. “In hindsight, being cancelled was the best thing that ever happened to us.” That sounds like something someone who was cancelled would say, but alright. “Amazon is the best home for us,” he said. Cast member Cas Anvar (who plays Martian fighter pilot with a southern drawl Alex Kamal) recently talked to Fandom Spotlight about what fans can expect, and how things will be different. The show had a cult following but not enough mainstream popularity, so SyFy cancelled it after its third season.īut lo, Amazon came to the rescue and will release a fourth season later this year. Corey, the show is a little like Game of Thrones in space, checking in with multiple characters spread across the solar system each episode as they vie for control of natural resources being drawn from the asteroid belt beyond Mars. ![]() Based on the ongoing series of novels by James S. The Expanse is the little sci-fi epic that could. ![]()
